Towards a new world automobile champion? In fact, the merger currently being negotiated between Honda and Nissan would give rise to a new giant in the sector in terms of sales volume, chasing the leaders Toyota and Volkswagen.
Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi on the world podium
If we take into account global sales since the beginning of the year, Honda is in seventh place with 2.7 million units from January to September, according to figures from Jato Dynamics.
Nissan, for its part, occupies ninth position with 2.5 million vehicles sold, always in this period of the first three quarters of 2024. In total, with nearly 5.3 million units, it would thus be placed in fourth position worldwide, ahead of Stellantis (4.1 million) and just behind Hyundai-Kia (5.4 million).
But we can also add Mitsubishi sales, 638,000 units from January to September 2024. Enough to overtake the Korean group and climb onto the world podium. With 5.9 million global sales, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi together would be behind Volkswagen (6.5 million) and Toyota (7.9 million).
Volumes greater than the alliance with Renault
We can also look to the year 2023: the Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi duo is then in second position, with just over 7.9 million units, behind Toyota (9.4 million) and ahead of Volkswagen (5.3 million).
A notable difference with the volumes achieved by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance: 5.6 million units in 2023, or 2.3 million more units for the new group.
