Good news if you are used to driving in Spain. As of January 1, 2026, it will be mandatory to have a small lighthouse that can be fixed on the ceiling in case of breakdown or accident. Equipment that replaces the triangle prior to the firm.
But foreign drivers, and therefore the French, will not be required to respect this obligation, recently said Spanish road security in a press release.
The French triangle accepted in Spain
The Vienna Convention, an international treaty that aims to share the different traffic rules worldwide, guarantees in summary promote this possibility of driving in different countries without too many restrictions. A text cited in the Spanish DGT (General Directorate of Traffic Directorate):
“The Vienna Convention establishes that countries may require, to allow the ‘international circulation’ in its territory, that the vehicle will be equipped aboard a signaling system that consists of a plaque in the form of a balanced triangle ‘or all other system of equal efficiency provided by the legislation of the country where the vehicle is registered ‘.
In other words, French drivers can continue to use their triangle prior to the firm in Spain.
What about Spaniards abroad?
What finally raises another question: the Spaniards, when they conduct in France and other countries, can they use their famous beacons?
Yes, for the same reason and that this beacon is considered a “device of equal efficiency” compared to the triangle prior to the firm. At least in the signatory countries of the two United Nations conventions of 1949 and 1968, of which France was part.
