Stellantis will soon offer the car market equipped with an autonomous level 3 driving system, which allows you to release the steering wheel and lift the road eyes at 60 km/h under certain conditions, the automotive group announced on Friday.

Already proposed by Mercedes and BMW, this automated driving technology is tested in the United States and Italy and is “ready to be deployed” by Stellantis, according to local regulations, Doug Wellman, director of AIDS of Driving (ADAS) for the group .

What cost?

The technology is developed for medium and large platforms in Stellantis, Welman said, or vehicles ranging from Peugeot 3008 to the Jeep Wagoneer S. but the group has not yet indicated which vehicles among its fifteen brands will benefit the first of this technology, and In what cost.

In Germany, BMW as Mercedes offers it optional to around 6,000 euros in its vessels in Almirante, the 7 series and the S class will allow in the spring of 2025 to rise to 95 km/h with the eyes closed. This level 3 autonomy device (on a scale to level 5, where there is no more steering wheel) is thought especially for traffic jams on the fast tracks, even at night or in the rain. The controller can now send messages or watch videos.

From level 2 to level 3

Most autonomous driving systems, as in Tesla, remain level 2 at the moment and require constant attention of the driver and his hands in the steering wheel. Level 3 represents a “huge” technological leap, based on the use of Lidar, laser sensors, said Doug Wellman.

Specifically, at level 3, drivers are warned that the “Stla Autodrive” system is available and activates it through a button. Then, the car changes to an automatic controller, the computer takes control of speed, address and braking to maintain safety distances. But the driver, observed by one or more cameras, must quickly recover control in case of a problem.
