The first European car manufacturer, Volkswagen, presented on Monday the production location of the future ID. This small car in the city of four rooms will leave the Palmela factory, 40 kilometers south of Lisbon, announced Thomas Schäfer, patron of the group’s flagship brand, VW, during a meeting with journalists in Wolfsburg (northern Germany), on the eve of the publication of the annual financial results of the group. The factory, which already produces the T-Rroc, uses almost 5,000 people, according to 2023 figures.
The model must allow the German group to update in the race for the main electricity. The new “people of the town” will be directly in competition with the T03 of Leapmotor, the Chinese brand of Stellantis, which is already in the market around 20,000 euros. It will also arrive after the future Citroën C3 Electric of the Stellantis Group, which is expected this year in less than 20,000 euros, as well as the Dacia Electric (less than 18,000) and the Twingo (less than 20,000 euros), both planned for 2026.
ID.2 produced in Spain next year
The four -door car will have 250 km of autonomy and 130 km/h of maximum speed, the group announced during a presentation to the press of its model, last Wednesday in Düsseldorf (West). To date, VW only offers much more expensive electric models, 35,000 euros. The brand also promised the production of 2026 of identification.2 in Spain, for around 25,000 euros. The ID.EVERY1 will occur “in Europe, for Europe,” he assured the group, which plans to relocate the production of its iconic golf model in Mexico, to reduce its costs.
Weakened by the fall of their sales and the erosion of its margins, Volkswagen announced this winter the abolition of 35,000 jobs in Germany within the VW brand in difficulty, as well as the cessation of production in two of its factories, a first historic. The manufacturers are under pressure to offer cheaper electrical models, due to the strengthening of European standards in carbon emissions of their fleets. However, the European Commission announced last week a postponement of this strengthening, relief to threatened manufacturers of billions of euros in fines.
