“The law has been badly done”: anger rises around areas with low emissions

The implementation of the ZFE in Montpellier causes the anger of several mayors of the agglomeration that obtained the suspension of tickets until 2027.

Since January 1, Montpellier has been one of the metropolis that limit the circulation of vehicles with a Crit’Air 3 vignette.

A measure that has problems moving to certain elected officials of agglomeration such as Laurent Jaoul, mayor of Saint-Brès:

“The law has been badly done. Today we know that a Crit-Air 1 vehicle in Range Rover or Porsche Cayenne contaminates much more than this mega because it is lighter.”

The councilor mobilized with another 23 mayors and obtained the suspension of tickets until 2027.

“Make our people with ecology”

As in Paris, the ZFE is among the themes of the campaign that already stir the debates in Montpellier for the municipal elections. These debates are more related to the support modalities for motorists than with the aim of combating pollution and are more often opposed to the city and their suburbs than to the elected officials of the same city. Founder of a group to defend the right to circulate, the writer Alexandre Jardin denounces a “contempt, excluding and segregation” device:

“We have ecological challenges and this thing is upset to our people with ecology.”

For his part, the delegate for the transport of the Montpellier Méditerranée metropolis defends himself ensuring that alternatives are proposed. “We configure the means so that people can move differently, with soft or active mobility, with the electric bicycle, with the shared trip because it is necessary to bring an alternative to all the inhabitants.”

Marseille, Strasbourg and Rouen exempt

The low -emission areas were introduced by the Mobility Orientation Law in 2019 and then reinforced by the Climate Law of 2021. Welcome in Europe, where air quality is degraded, its objective is to push motorists to buy less polluting, hybrid or electric vehicles, or use public transport and, so to speak, “soft” transport modes with transport technology.

Like Montpellier, the Metropolis of Grand Paris, Lyon and Grenoble also limit the circulation of vehicles with a Crit’Air 3 sticker since January 1. These metropolis have implemented many defeats (disabled people, workers over time …) and purchase help to soften the effect of these restrictions, even if their criticisms denounce areas of “strong exclusion” that sanction the most modest households.

To date, 12 agglomerations have already established ZFE, including Aix-Marseille-Provence, Nice, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Reims, Rouen, Saint-étienne and Clermont-Ferrand. Since January 1, 2024, they have already imposed total prohibitions in unlacified cars (registered cars before 1997, except the collection cars) and the non -pre -preachable light services vehicles (registered before September 30, 1997). Most also have configured traffic schedules or total prohibitions for Crit’Air cars 4 and 5 classified (diesel cars registered before 2006).

Until the beginning of this year, it was planned that Marseille, Strasbourg and Rouen should restrict as Paris and Lyon the circulation of critical cars 3 in 2025, but the Ministry of Ecological Transition announced in March that they no longer had this obligation, due to the improvement of their air quality.
