No speed limit of 110 km/h on motorways. Invited this Monday night by BFMTV on the occasion of the broadcast of the docu-fiction “2050, let’s open our eyes”, Elisabeth Borne closed the door on a reduction in speed from 130 km/h to 110 km/h on the highway for the fight against global warming.
“I think it is not the right path,” said the head of government, referring in particular to people “who need to travel by road and who may have time constraints.”
“I think it is important to report on the savings that can be achieved by driving slower, on the interest that this can represent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but we cannot operate within a ban range,” said Elisabeth Borne.
“Get Everyone In”
However, driving at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h on the motorway would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 20% and fuel consumption by 25%. Proposed by the members of the Citizen Convention for Climate in 2020, the measure had been rejected by Emmanuel Macron, following the failure of the 80 km/h reform on the secondary network.
“If we’re not careful that everyone participates, at some point we won’t make any progress,” Elisabeth Borne considered, citing the docu-fiction’s second, worst-case scenario, which results in +2 warming. 4°C by 2050. “I am not in favor of piling on restrictive measures on our fellow citizens,” she added.
