The R5 Turbo is preparing his return. Inspired by the 1980s, Renault announced on Monday morning the “extreme” version of its new Electric R5, whose arrival had been announced in December 2024. This “R5 Turbo 3rd” is a tribute to the emblematic R5 Turbo of 1980 and R5 Turbo 2 of 1982, which had won a prestigious graphic in the competition.
The R5 Turbo 3RD is proud of a motorization of 540 horsepower thanks to two “motor engines” in the rear, against 95 to 150 horsepower for a conventional electric R5. Renault praises the autonomy of more than 400 kilometers. Able to pass from 0 to 100 kilometers in less than 3.5 seconds, it can reach a maximum speed of 270 kilometers/hour. It measures 4.08 meters in length for 2.03 meters wide and 1.38 meters high, for a weight of 1,450 kilograms.
“Mini-Supers”
Renault ensures that the R5 Turbo 3RD can also inspect classic paths. “It is made to do both,” says Sandeep Bhambra, Design Manager of Renault Concept Cars, evoking the “new category” of “mini-surface.” “Obviously we can use it in the circuit, but it also has a way to drive like a daily car,” he explains in the BFMTV microphone.
“It’s a brand image car,” Sandeep Bhambra said.
Renault is still discreet at prices. The R5 Turbo 3RD “will be offered in several key markets such as Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Australia in 1980 copies,” a reference to the R5 Turbo marketing, said the manufacturer in its press release. The reserves will be open “in the coming weeks”, they specify Renault, for the first deliveries “during the year 2027”.
