A fake fall. According to the latest figures published by Road Safety, 295 people lost their lives in October, three less than in the same month last year.
But with traffic still disrupted by covid-related restrictions, the figures are now compared to 2019, the baseline year before the pandemic. Enough to show an increase in this mortality with 38 more people, a jump of 15%.
Fewer accidents and fewer injuries
“Travels in October 2022 are experiencing a slight increase of almost +5% on average compared to October 2021 according to Cerema,” says the road safety press release.
On the positive side, the other main indicators are down, still compared to 2019. There were therefore fewer bodily accidents (4,720, i.e. -8%) and fewer injuries (5,884, i.e. -9 %).
Mortality on the rise for pedestrians and cyclists
On the other hand, two categories show worrying figures on the rise. 58 pedestrians lost their lives in October, 27 more than in October 2019, and 34 cyclists, 18 more.
There is also a slight increase in motorized two-wheeler users, with 68 people killed, or 9 more. Among motorists, there are 122 deaths, 17 less than in October 2019.
Since the beginning of the year, 2,748 people have lost their lives on the roads of France, compared to 2,944 deaths in 2021 and 3,244 in 2019. In 2020, a year marked by covid and severe travel restrictions, this figure will reduced to 2,550.
