Soon cars … turquoise?

Legally admitted colors for vehicle lights include red, orange. Mercedes also presses to introduce turquoise blue … for autonomous cars.

Do not be surprised if you meet a car on the road that activates the turquoise blue traffic lights. He is not a fan of tuning who wanted to customize his Honda Civic in a completely illegal way: in fact, it is an autonomous car.

To indicate that the driver is busy with something else and does not have his hands on the steering wheel, which is the AI that the pilots will activate the position lights in the front, in the back and in the mirrors, of this recognizable color … The idea is that motorists or pedestrians do not worry if they see inside that the road is supposed to observe your phone or read. And also the police, who know that it is not worth arresting the driver in question.

At the moment, these are experiments that are carried out in the United States or in Germany with a very strict supervision obviously, particularly by Mercedes, which had this idea first and promotes its generalization. What to turn it into an international standard?

Why turquoise and no other color? First, because it stands out very clearly from the yellow-orange red palette, which is the only one authorized today. So, because this color is visible day and night, from all angles. Finally, because we are not likely to confuse it with the deepest blue used, for example, by ambulances or the police …

How to communicate with self -employed cars?

Team manufacturers and manufacturers have been working on this issue for years: how motorists will be able to communicate with those around them when cars will work alone.

There have been other experiments, particularly to reassure pedestrians and cyclists. For example, to tell them they can cross without danger. The messages are shown directly in the body: “I give in the passage.” The car “speaks” with its surroundings or headlights capable of wink to invite the pedestrian to cross, or even equipped with projectors, which will directly project elements on the road to communicate with its surroundings: arrows or symbols that indicate the intentions of the vehicle.

In the list of suggestions, there is also a small crossing of bright pedestrians to invite the circumspect pedestrian that can pass without danger or even rear lights that will project arrows or symbols to indicate that the car is about to make a niche. These are just some examples, but this idea of ensuring that the car can communicate with its environment will become more and more crucial, since it is no longer the motorist who will take care of it.

The self -employed cars do not run the streets, but gradually come, even if the car without steering wheel or pedals is far from being on the road. But with help with an increasingly sophisticated driving that makes the edge between “I drive the car” and “is the car that takes me” becomes increasingly.

In France, level 3 autonomous cars are already authorized by law (the driver can do something else, watch a movie, for example, but he must be able to recover control in case of a problem). And if you go to the United States, Las Vegas or San Francisco, autonomous taxis are absolutely everywhere and become common, while waiting for Elon Musk and their cyberbas. Therefore, we will have a multiplication of vehicles in which drivers will have less and less to do, where they should no longer be attentive and where the car will have to communicate to communicate with their surroundings.
