The average price of a used car is already close to 25,000 euros

More than 24,000 euros on average for a used car at La Centrale, almost 30,000 euros at Autoscout24, the price of used cars continues to rise, with demand becoming stronger than supply.

But where will they stop? At the end of 2022, prices are still skyrocketing on the second-hand market.

More than 24,000 euros on average for a second hand

According to the Autoviz barometer, compiled from advertisements placed in La Centrale and quoted by the echoesthe average price of a used vehicle less than eight years old exceeded 24,000 euros in October, compared to 21,408 euros in February.

A basic trend: in 2021, a record year for the second-hand market, prices had already risen by 13% according to the Autoscout24 barometer. At the origin: the crisis of the new market, which logically feeds that of the second hand. The difficulties encountered by automakers in recent years with the covid and semiconductor crisis have caused the annual production of new vehicles to plummet.

increase from 10 to 14%

Autoscout24 also saw the average ad price jump to €29,860 at the end of October, a 14% increase from the beginning of the year. An important difference with La Centrale that Vincent Hancart, general director of the site in France, justifies by a more premium positioning, in particular with a large offer of German models, and ads placed online 90% by professionals.

Present in many markets in Europe, Autoscout24 has also experienced strong increases in Germany, where the average price of ads on the platform reached €28,562, up 12%. Prices are still lower in Italy (22,771 euros) or in Belgium (25,171 euros) but have increased by 10% since the beginning of the year.

An overheated market

Fewer vehicles on the supply side and explosive demand on the other side. Given the sharp increase in delivery times for new construction, buyers have resorted en masse to this second-hand market. From just over two used cars sold to a new one in France in 2019, this ratio reached 3.6 last year and remains quite close in 2022, at 3.45 according to Autoscout24.

However, the market now seems to be overheated and is therefore seeing its level of sales collapse: at the end of October and since the beginning of the year, it was down 14.3% compared to 2021, to 4.3 million. copies that have changed owners.
