Car sales experienced a third straight month of rebound in October with 745,855 units sold, driven by the Volkswagen group, automakers said on Thursday.
The automotive market thus registered a third consecutive month of rebound, with +12.2% in one year, after a January-July period greatly slowed down by the shortage of electronic parts, the Manufacturers Association (ACEA) reported in a Press release.
Sales rebounded strongly in Germany (+16.8%), Italy (+14.6%), Spain (+11.7%) and Belgium (+21.6%). France recorded an increase of +5.5%.
+5.5% in France
The European figures, however, remain far from the records registered before the pandemic, with sales of more than a million vehicles in October 2017 and 2019.
During the first ten months of 2022, the market lags behind by 8.1% compared to the same period of 2021.
As in September, the Volkswagen group, number one in Europe, took most of this rebound.
The group sold 190,255 cars, a strong increase of 41.7% in one year, particularly for its Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands. Porsche posted a 16.2% drop.
Number two Stellantis, which held up well in October 2021, posted a slight decline of 4.3%, with 141,500 units sold. Its Peugeot, Fiat and Citroen brands have all fallen, while Opel and Jeep have remained flat.
The Renault group also remained stable with 76,916 cars sold (+0.2), a good performance for Dacia that contrasts with the decline of the Renault brand.
