After five consecutive months of decrease, road mortality in continental France increased by 4% in April, compared to the same month last year, road safety announced Friday. According to estimates of the National Interministerial Observatory for Mental Security, 247 people died in April on the roads of Continental France, against 237 in April 2024 (+4%).
“There is an increase in motorists mortality (125 killed at 17 more), pedestrians (34 dead or 7 more) and cyclists (21 dead or 4 more),” specifies road safety in its press release. On the other hand, the number of two -wheeled motorized vehicles killed on the road decreased, with 52 dead, 17 less than in April 2024, indicates this same source.
Body accidents increased by 5% for a year
In the 4,496 body traffic accidents identified by the police on the main roads of France in April 2025 (5% more than a year), 1,323 serious injuries were counted, an increase of 1%. On the roads abroad, 16 people lost their lives in April, marking an increase of 7% for a year. However, the number of body accidents (248) decreased by 15% and that of the injured (319) by 19% compared to April 2024.
“The alarm sounds in the use of the telephone while driving in the professional context,” said Florence Guillaume, interminiisterial delegate for road safety, cited in this press release. “Almost a third of fatal accidents during mission trips are linked to lack of attention, very often in relation to the use of the phone,” he continued, on the occasion of road safety days at work.
