New decrease in new car sales in France in May. PIN -Car records decreased by 12.3% for a year, according to data communicated on Sunday, June 1 by the automotive platform (PFA). A total of 123,918 private vehicles entered into circulation in France last month, the representative of the 4,000 companies in the sector reported. The new car market has experienced an 8% decrease since the beginning of the year compared to 2024.
In detail, Renault and Stellantis remain with great the manufacturers of the French favorite cars in May, with respectively 34,500 cars sold by the first and 3441 for the second. The Volkswagen Group is in the third step of the podium, with 19,731 new car records.
Another figure is even more impressive: that of the newly registered Tesla number. The American Automotive Group records a decrease of almost 70% of its sales in May with only 721 new cars. Far from the 2,197 cars sold a year ago.
A half mast market for some time?
“Almost all indicators are red in May,” explains Marie-Laure Nivot, head of automotive market analysis in AAA Data, in a press release. “With the orders of new passenger cars by 14 % according to the CCFA data (January to April 2025 compared to 2024), we do not expect the recovery in the registration trend in the coming months. Changes in public policies have made prudent buyers and opportunists to expect an electrical lease announced for September.”
These bad figures are also linked to an uncertain context of the commercial war carried out by the United States and the economic situation in France, with a household confidence at a historically low level in May.
