Up to 18,000 euros well: throwing waste from your car can be very expensive in Italy

Throwing a megot or a garbage bag is now strongly sanctioned in Italy. In a nature reserve, this can even lead to a prison sentence.

Gestures to prohibit. Launching waste from the window of your car is now very sanctioned in Italy, said an article in the German magazine Auto Bild seen by Auto plus. For small waste, such as a cigarette megator or scarves, the offender now runs a risk of a fine of 1,188 euros, provides this new law adopted in early August in Italy. Enough to convince yourself to invest in a pocket ashtray or for your car, especially with the risk of fire that is added to environmental degradation, and waiting for the next trash can get rid of your used handkerchief.

For larger waste that is thrown from their car, glass bottles, cans or a garbage bag, the fine can reach 18,000 euros. The sanction can be even heavier if this law is committed in a nature reserve or in any other protected area:

“In addition to the fine, the offender can be arrested within 48 hours and is exposed to a sentence that ranges between six months and more than five years in prison. In case of recurrence or hazardous waste, the sanctions can reach seven years,” says the Italian magazine Ecological.

The new law also provides additional sanctions, with a driver’s license suspension up to six months or vehicle confiscation. If the vehicle belongs to a company, the latter is also exposed to sanctions and can also be responsible for these acts.

A video can be enough to start the prosecution

Important point: the test in the video, a surveillance camera or taken by the smartphone of a witness, may be sufficient to activate the prosecution.

“Thanks to the images, the authorities can find the owner thanks to the registration and inflict a fine even a few days later,” said the ecological article.

Surveillance potentially 24 hours a day and even on the holidays that could deter those who maintained this bad habit, Luigi Altamura, police commander in Verona underlines.

In France, one in 5 motorists still declares to throw their waste through the car window on the road, said a recent survey of the Vinci Foundation. In Italy, this strengthening of sanctions aims to preserve the environment, but also improve road safety. Waste can hit other vehicles or encourage sudden maneuvers to avoid them.
