A historical minimum: there were less dead on the roads in 2024, despite persistent risk behaviors

The number of people killed on admitted roads (toll) fell sharply in 2024 with 129 deaths, against 182 in 2023.

Fatal accidents on the road reached a historically low level in 2024, but behaviors at risk of drivers persist, according to data from the sector published this Thursday, August 28.

114 fatal accidents were identified on the road granted (toll) in 2024 against 164 in 2023, said the Association of French Road Companies (ASFA) in its 2024 safety balance.

This is the “lowest rate never registered on the roads granted,” according to Asfa.

The number of murdered people fell sharply accordingly, with 129 deaths in 2024 against 182 in 2023. ASFA, on the other hand, deplored the “persistence of risk behaviors” in drivers.

Alcohol, drugs, lack of attention and drowsiness

The main cause of fatal accidents remains the consumption of alcohol, drugs and conductive drugs (35%), which particularly refers to drivers under 35 years. Excessive speed (20%) and the presence of pedestrians (20%), especially those that leave vehicles when they stop, are among the other most frequent factors of fatal accidents.

“Lack of attention”, often linked to the use of electronic devices (smartphone, tablet, GPS …), has the origin of 14% of fatal accidents of 2024 and particularly important in home/work trips, with a peak between 2 pm and 6 pm

After several years of decrease, the factor linked to drowsiness and fatigue experienced a “worrying increase”, from 13% in 2023 to 19% in 2024. He returned to traffic, fatal accidents linked to drowsiness occur mainly at night “, with a peak between 2 am and 4 am”, and a more frequency on weekends.

Road workers in danger

The year 2024 was also marked by the death of two professionals of the highway in intervention: a highway agent broke the A8 on March 3 and, in August, a Sanef employee (Société des Authoroutes Du Nord and East de France) killed by a high -speed motorist at the level of a touch.

Given the “worrying” evaluation of 2024 accidents that involve highways from highways, which apply to 143 accidents and 15 victims, ASFA demands the surveillance of drivers to guarantee their safety.

3,432 people died in 2024 on the roads of continental and abroad (+1% compared to 2023), according to the general road safety balance. This evaluation amounts to 239 dead on all roads, granted and not granted, but remains to decrease by 11% compared to 2023, with 30 less dead.
