Road mortality has increased considerably (+18%) in August in continental France compared to the same month last year, road safety announced Monday, which makes “more deadly” for 14 years.
According to estimates of the National Interministerial Observatory for Mental Security, 341 people died last month on the roads of France, against 290 in August 2024.
A deadly August
“It is the most deadly August on the roads for almost 15 years,” said Michèle Lugrand, interministerial delegate for the interim road safety, asking “to return to size collectively.”
“This degradation refers to all road networks, all ages and all travel modes, with the exception of two motorized vehicles,” he added. The ONISR significantly registered, compared to 2024, 53 motorists, eight pedestrians and two more murdered cyclists.
The interminostial delegate for road safety withdrew the risk factors: speeding, use of the phone while driving, reckless, that “increases (NT) considerably the occurrence of dramas.”
The number of serious injuries (1,601 people) remained stable for a year in continental France.
On the roads abroad, the number of body accidents, on the other hand, fell 24%, with 303 injured and 23 deaths, two less than at the same time last year.
Rather stable figures for 12 months
At least in July, road mortality had already increased by 23% compared to last year, with 338 people who died in Continental France.
This evaluation had been judged “very worrying” by François-Noël Buffet, a minister resigned with the Interior Minister, who denounced “an unacceptable relaxation of behavior behind the steering wheel.”
In the last 12 months, the balance is still quite stable:
“In general, mortality during these last 12 months increased a +1 % compared to the previous 12 months, and greater +1 % compared to 2019, a year taken as a reference for the 2020-2030 decade,” says this August evaluation.
During the year 2024, 3,193 deaths were recorded on the roads of France, an almost stable mortality of the previous year, with a slight fall in the injured, according to Onisr’s figures.
