The first European manufacturer Volkswagen will temporarily suspend production in two German places dedicated to electric models, in reaction to a stronger demand than expected, AFP learned this Friday, September 26.
Volkswagen “will interrupt the production of vehicles in their Zwickau and Dresde”, in Saxony “sites, during the first week of the autumn holidays” that began on October 6, a spokesman said.
“Thus we are adapting our production program to the market situation,” he added.
The automotive market is crossed by “great uncertainty”, with “the customs conflict with the United States and the debate in Germany at the exit of the heat engine”, two factors that “encourage customers to doubt before buying electric vehicles,” according to this source.
Cortes of series positions
The previous day, on Thursday, the Bosch team manufacturer announced the abolition of 13,000 additional positions, or a tenth of its workforce in Germany, also evoked the low demand for electric vehicles.
At the beginning of September, Ford also said he was going to eliminate up to 1,000 positions in his Colonia factory, dedicated to Electric.
The Zwickau site assembles the Audi Q4 e-tron, as well as the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.5. In Dresde, where ID.3 also occurs, the production will definitely leave at the end of 2025, according to an agreement dating from the end of 2024.
This agreement concluded with the personnel representatives establishes the abolition of 35,000 jobs for 2030, or 29% of its workforce in Germany, but without factory closure or economic dismissals.
In addition, the Emden site, in Basse-Sape, specialized in Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.7, has already reduced employee hours and production will also be interrupted for several days in the coming weeks, reports the Bloomberg agency, which quotes sources close to the file. Questioned by AFP, Volkswagen did not want to confirm this information.
