Touched by a violent cyber attack and after losing dozens of millions of euros, Jaguar Land Rover will partially resume its production in the United Kingdom

Victim of a cyber attack for a month, the British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has just announced a partial recovery of its production.

Shaking for a month by a violent cyber attack, the British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover announced on Monday, September 29, a partial recovery of its production on Monday, September 29, a new step towards a return to normal for its employees, for many in technical unemployment and its many subcontractors.

“We inform our colleagues, distributors and suppliers that certain parts of our manufacturing activities will resume in the next few days,” the group wrote in their press release.

The company, owned by the Indian group Tata Motors and that uses 34,000 people in the United Kingdom, had already announced last week the partial recovery of its computer systems.

This weekend, he also received more than welcome from the British government this weekend, through a loan guarantee that allows him to “unlock up to 1.5 billion pounds (1.7 billion euros)”, according to the government press release.

An estimated cost of 57 million euros per week

Revealed on September 2, the cyber attack had forced the group to close their systems and production.

The cost of this stop amounts to 50 million pounds (57.2 million euros) per week loss of production, according to the BBC.

This interruption has also caused paying delays, which gives difficulties to the most fragile suppliers, at risk of bankruptcy.

With his support, London intends to help JLR’s production chain, the largest in the British automotive sector, composed of much of the SMEs and uses around 120,000 people.

“Protect qualified works”

“This cyber attack was not only an attack against an emblematic British brand, but also against our automotive sector,” said Commerce Minister Peter Kyle, for whom this support should make possible “protect the qualified works.”

The British automotive industry uses more than 800,000 people.

“We continue to work tirelessly together with cybersecurity specialists, the NCSC (National Cyber Security Center) of the British Government and the security of the degree,” JLR said in his press release on Monday.

The company acknowledged that “certain data had been affected” by the cyber attack, without specifying to what extent, or if they had been stolen. Nor did he detail whether these worried suppliers or customers.

This incident occurred following a recent wave of cyber attacks that have affected several store channels in the United Kingdom, including Marks & Spencer (M&S), Harrods and CO-OP, which quantified the impact on their operational gain at 80 million pounds (92 million euros).

JLR, who sold around 430,000 vehicles in 2024 according to his latest annual report, has already suffered this year the customs duties imposed by Donald Trump, first of 27.5%, then 10% after an agreement between London and Washington.

The company had suspended its vehicle deliveries to the United States in April due to these customs taxes, then published in early July, quarterly sales volumes in a strong decline.

The manufacturer had announced a few days later the abolition of a maximum of 500 supervision positions in the United Kingdom, or 1.5% of the total British workforce.
