For the month of November 2022, the drop in mortality should be put into perspective. According to the latest data published by road safety, with 248 deaths on the road, it is reduced by 4% compared to 2019, the reference year. On the other hand, it has increased considerably (+8%) compared to November 2021. And for the 11 months of the year, it is already higher than all road deaths in 2021.
“Displacements in November 2022 were slightly higher on average compared to November 2021,” according to CEREMA
Compared to the same period last year, the figures provided by the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) show worrying variations. While the number of fatalities is increasing, accidents with personal injuries are decreasing (4,368, -1%) as is the number of injuries (5,340, -2%).
Pedestrian mortality on the rise
Motorists lead the number of fatalities with 127 deaths (+3% compared to 2021). They are followed by pedestrians (47, +3%), then motorcyclists (35, +1%) and EDPm users (5, +3%). The only ones that show a decrease are cyclists (11, -1%).
Most accidents occur outside built-up areas where road safety accounts for 150 deaths (+8%). In urban areas, the figure reaches 79 deaths (+2%) and 19 (+8%) on the highway.
The month of December already worries road safety. “A la veille du carré final de la Coupe du Monde de football et surtout des fêtes de fin d’année, j’invite chacun d’entre nous à prévoir ses déplacements retour”, conseille dans un communiqué Florence Guillaume, déléguée interministérielle à la road safety.
But for the year as a whole, the results are already dismal. Road safety is experiencing a worrying development. In 2022, it already counts 2,997 deaths against 2,944 for all of 2021, but less than for all of 2019 (3,244).
