Road safety: these departments where mobile speed cameras flash the most in France

Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire… A study reveals the regions and departments most affected by speed controls by mobile radars and those in which motorists exceed the authorized speed more frequently.

It is the first one. Now it is possible to know where the speed controls carried out by mobile, road and department radars are carried out most frequently, reveals Friday the parisianaccording to figures from the Department of Automated Control.

Mobile speed cameras, which make it possible to detect excessive speed in unmarked vehicles circulating on the roads, have been progressively implemented in recent years in 39 test departments. In almost half of the departments, the driving of these cars has been entrusted since 2021 to private operators.

Most Frequently Controlled Northwest

The figures reveal that, among the 39 departments evaluated, motorists are more frequent in the northwest of the country. This trend is not so much linked to the driving habits of the inhabitants of these regions as to the fact that the deployment of mobile speed cameras began in this part of France from 2018.

In detail, the departments with the most controls are in particular Manche and Ille-et-Vilaine, with more than 400,000 controls per year each. Finistère, Morbihan and Seine-Maritime have more than 300,000 controls per year.

On the contrary, the departments of the East and South-West are the ones with the least risk of being captured by an on-board radar. Haute-Marne has less than 8,000 inspections per year. The southeast is not worried, radar cars have not been deployed there so far.

Donkey cap for the Landes and the Somme

And who are the worst students? Still according to figures from the Automated Control Department, they are found on the roads of the Landes and the Somme, where there are almost 15% of controls 10% above the speed limit.

Good point, however, for motorists in the North and Pas-de-Calais, where only 6% of the 10% checks were noticed at the maximum authorized speed.

In general, more than 7 out of 10 drivers (72%) drive within the authorized limits. 1 in 10 exceeds the limits, beyond the authorized technical margin, and risks being fined.
