In 2022, what was the best-selling sports car in France? It’s clearly the Alpine A110 that comes out on top, according to figures provided by data specialist AAA Data.
The criteria? In the ranking below are the best-selling new thermal cars with a power of more than 200 horsepower and outside the SUV segment.
The Alpino limits its penalty
With 2,138 new registrations in 2022, the Alpine A110 clearly stands out in the lead, also being the only non-German brand in the top 10. The little Frenchman has a starting price of 62,500 euros, a relatively affordable budget for the category. Its 252-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and its light weight of 1,100 kg also allow it to limit its malus, this surcharge that is applied to vehicles that emit the most CO2.
In 2022, the penalty for the A110 ranged from 1,172 euros (152 grams of CO2/km) to 1,901 euros (158 g/km). In 2023, with the hardening of the penalty, the ticket increases significantly, from 1,761 euros to 2,726 euros.
The Porsche 911 on the roof of the malus
The Audi A6 and the Porsche 911 complete the podium, but with much more limited volumes, with 736 and 567 sales respectively. It must also be said that the initial budget and the associated penalty are much higher in these models.
In a Porsche 911 Carrera, for example, with the 385 horsepower 6-cylinder (starting price 115,650 euros), CO2 emissions amount to 245 g/km. A level that exceeds the ceiling of the sanction: from 225 grams, buyers had to add 40,000 euros last year, 50,000 euros this year.
Impressive taxes that also explain these low volumes in the category in France. In the rest of the ranking we find logically represented the other major German brands with Mercedes (Class E and SL) and BMW (Series 5 and M4). Audi also places its RS6 in the top 10. The 911 is not the only Porsche model represented: the Panamera and 718 Cayman are 6th and 9th respectively.
