In their press release published on Monday morning, Renault and Nissan say they want to relaunch their partnership around “key projects”. What remains in common among manufacturers today? The question arises since the two companies appear to have taken different paths.
“24 years ago, when the Alliance was created, there was an industrial logic”, explains an expert in the sector, “since the operational projects of Renault and Nissan have completely diverged”, he continues.
Renault and Nissan have shared a world map
It is a bit as if the two manufacturers had shared a map of the world: in Nissan the United States, Japan and China, in Renault Europe, the Maghreb and Latin America. Since the start of the negotiations, Luca de Meo, Renault’s CEO, has put 10 to 15 industrial projects on the table for the two companies to work together. Impossible to say at the moment how many Nissans will have finally chosen, but the two companies have targeted three areas to collaborate: Latin America, India and Europe.
In the Old Continent, Nissan will confirm next Monday during the official announcement of the agreement, the production of its Micra at the Renault factory in Douai along the same lines as the future R5. Mitsubishi, for its part, will produce two of its new models in the Renault factories in Spain and Turkey. New vehicles built in this way must also be advertised.
In Latin America, Renault and Nissan will unite some of their factories and platforms. The French manufacturer has assembly plants in Argentina and Brazil, while the Japanese is now focused on Mexico.
India, a key market for the two manufacturers
Finally, India, which became the world’s third-largest auto market at the start of the year, is being closely watched by the two manufacturers. Now they have a joint factory there in Chennai and they should further boost their partnership in the country. Renault will help Nissan to enter this strategic market, where it has very little presence. The French group, for its part, should soon manufacture an electric version of its Kwid there.
