In 2022, 3,541 people died on the roads of France (pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, motorcyclists, etc.), BFMTV learned from road safety. A balance 10.1% higher than in 2021, with 322 additional victims.
This increase is explained by the level of circulation, which has returned to a level equivalent to what it was before the start of the health crisis. In 2019, 3,498 died as a result of traffic accidents. In three years, the increase is therefore “only” 1.3% (43 more victims).
A majority of men
The vast majority of these road fatalities are men (78%). This overexposure of the male gender is also found in the percentage of serious injuries (75%).
Of the 3,541 dead, 244 of them are cyclists. Here, too, the increase is significant compared to previous years: 57 more victims than in 2019.
Most of these fatal accidents occur on rural roads: 59% of them occur outside built-up areas. Only 9% of fatal accidents occur on highways.
In addition to the general increase in the number of deaths on the roads, the authorities are concerned about two data from this report for the year 2022. First, mortality among young people, since almost one in three victims is under 34 years of age. But also the death toll in the Overseas Territories.
Last year, 281 people died in the overseas territories, which corresponds to a rather worrying increase of almost 11% compared to 2019 (254 deaths), much higher than that of mainland France during the same period.
The provisional balance of road accidents for 2022 will be presented at a press conference by Sonia Backès, Secretary of State for Citizenship, this Wednesday at noon.
