Road safety: 14% fewer deaths on the roads of France in one year

The National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR) recorded 195 deaths on the roads of France last month, this is 14% less compared to March 2022.

A total of 195 people died on the roads of France last month, this is 14% less than the figures registered during the month of March 2022 (226 deaths).

A decrease in serious injuries as well.

In the whole of the first quarter of 2023, the number of fatalities (641) fell by 9% and the number of seriously injured (3,001) by 6% compared to the same period of the previous year, specifies the Observatory of the national interministerial channel. Security (ONISR) in a press release.

“In particular, there is a drop in the number of dead cyclists (-10 dead), dead motorcyclists (-11%) and young people dead (-51%),” he continues. The ONISR also records 1,031 serious injuries, 15% less than in March 2022. In total, the number of accidents with injuries registered by the police stood at 3,777 in March this year.

Higher cyclist mortality

Road Safety points out that “travel and accident rates have returned to a rate close to that prior to the (Covid-19) pandemic or even higher, with changes sometimes linked to new habits.”

Thus, he points out that cyclist mortality is “much higher than that of 2019”, the last pre-pandemic year, with “236 cyclists killed in the last 12 months, that is, +26% compared to 2019”.

“Mortality in EDPm (motorized personal transport devices, of the scooter type) has increased considerably in the last 12 months. Thirty-three people have died in the last year, ”he concludes.
