Gas and electricity prices: France is still better off than its European neighbors

A study by Hello Watt analyzed energy prices in Europe. And France remains relatively sheltered from the rise.

The government repeats it like a mantra. The measures put in place to mitigate the rise in energy prices, mainly the two shields electricity and gas tariffs allow households to be better protected than their European neighbors, a study carried out by the provider Hello Watt seems to confirm this statement. The comparison, which is based on the price paid in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and subscriptions, is largely favorable to France.

As for electricity, “we see it quickly: the French are much more protected than their neighbors, with an electricity price between 2 and 3 times cheaper”, can be read in the Hello Watt press release. Last August, the differences are really marked, as can be seen in the following infographic. On average, the average price per kWh, with subscription, is 21.3 cents in France compared to 41.51 cents in Italy and 56.3 cents in Germany.

“In recent years, electricity prices in France have experienced significant increases. However, if we compare the evolution of prices in France with that of other European countries, it seems that France is one of the countries that offers the lowest prices”, he continues. the provider.

Remember that the increase in the regulated electricity rate (TRV) was limited to 4% in February 2022.

Gas prices tripled

If electricity prices began to rise last fall in Europe, gas prices exploded during the same period. Thus, it practically tripled in one year in Germany and the Netherlands. In both countries, kWh prices were above 30 euro cents in August 2022, while they were barely above 10 cents a year earlier.

By comparison, gas prices have remained relatively stable in France (thanks to a regulated price freeze from the end of 2021), Belgium and the UK.

Next year, both supplier and observers believe the rise in electricity prices is unlikely to stop. But once again, France should do better than anywhere else with the maintenance of a tariff shieldcertainly less protective than in 2022, as the maximum increase will rise to 15% next year. According to HelloWatt, the price per kWh in December 2023 should not exceed 24.50 euro cents in France compared to 21.30 in August 2022.

For gas, the increase will also be limited to 15%. “Thus, the natural gas bill will increase by 25 euros per month, instead of the 200 euros expected without the tariff shield,” advances HellWatt. And the gap with the rest of Europe should be maintained even if certain countries such as the United Kingdom or Germany are. . implementing new arrangements.
