All kinds of businesses have been affected by the riots in recent days. This is clear from the latest report from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, which drew up a first typology of the various vandalized and looted establishments, evoking a situation “stabilized since Saturday.”
Unsurprisingly, tobacco shops account for the majority of businesses affected. Bercy confirms the strong upward revision in the number of tobacconists affected, which the president of the Confederation of tobacconists already pointed out last night on the BFMTV set, which now reaches 436 establishments. Of these some 400 tobacconists, more than 300 were looted while 10% of them were totally destroyed.
Many reopenings this weekend
Then come the food stores, including discount brands like Action and Lidl. In this category, Bercy lists around 200 affected stores, including 30 burned, like in Sevran, but also notes that most have already reopened. Some dozens of fast food outlets were also vandalized, such as the McDonald’s restaurant in Rosny-sous-Bois.
A similar number of clothing stores were looted, as happened in central Paris overnight from Thursday to Friday or in Strasbourg, but the stores will reopen this weekend to take advantage of the sales period. Bercy distinguishes sports stores, all of which, some 60, have been looted, whether they are shoe stores, generalists or even bicycle shops. Again, the sites in question should be able to reopen this weekend.
Although rarer, DIY stores were not spared and of the dozen businesses affected, two were burned. Finally, a considerable number of bank branches (370) were vandalized. The Ministry of Economy and Finance specifies that the census takes longer to carry out for small businesses, apart from tobacconists, due to the lesser efficiency of the representative professional organizations and the lack of reliability of the figures communicated by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry .
