The relationship of the French with the richest has not improved. It even got worse. Indeed, according to the monthly barometer of the economy carried out by Odoxa for BFM Business, Challenges and AGIPI, almost three quarters of those surveyed think that thewe “don’t like the rich in France”. And more than half (52%) admit they don’t like them.
A resentment derived above all from the comparison they make between the assets of others and their average salaries. “When we look at the details of the results, we realize that the rich man is not Bernard Arnault or Vincent Bolloré in the minds of our fellow citizens. The rich is his neighbor who earns exactly double his salary”, explains Gaël Sliman, president of Odoxa.
The French more generally consider one to be “rich” from €5,000 a month in income or €500,000 in assets.
However, for 7 out of 10 French people, “it is good to want to earn money and get rich”, underlines the barometer. But the French are just as numerous to think “that society does not encourage the French to get rich” (68%). We also note that 73% of those surveyed have not set themselves the goal of getting rich and that 7% consider it to be so.
But mistrust of the rich is fueled by a sense of a “broken social elevator.” 6 out of 10 French people think they are worse off than their parents at the same age, a situation that has been reversed compared to 20 years ago.
And this feeling may not get better. According to the ranking of the magazine. challenges published on Wednesday, the accumulated professional wealth of the 500 greatest fortunes in France rose nearly 17% year-over-year. Reach a record estimate of 1,170 million euros this year.
