The price of food items that make up the basket Zero VAT reduced by 9.67% until the end of Juneaccording to data from the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE), released this Monday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
“The price of the food basket has recorded a positive and sustained decline since April 17, the day before the exemption came into effect, with a 9% reduction to 67% by the end of June, according to data collected by the Food and Economic Security Authority up to that period,” the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Sea said in a statement.
This data was released after the Monitoring Committee of the Pact to Stabilize and Reduce Food Prices met this Monday, which is the fourth time since, on April 18, the measure banned 46 types of food products from the basket.
In addition to the VAT exemption on the price paid by the final consumer, this measure includes an increased support for agricultural production, namely green electricity, an exceptional support for agricultural diesel and a support to mitigate the impact of the increase in the price of fertilizers and fertilisers.
As part of this production support, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, approximately EUR 135.5 million has been transferred to farmers so far, reaching 85,786 farmers.
In addition to ASAE, the supervisory committee also includes the Competition Authority, the Tax Office, the Directorate-General for Economic Activities, the Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs, the Planning, Policy and General Administration Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED) and the Confederation of Peasants of Portugal (CAP).
In addition to representatives of these entities, the meeting on Monday was attended by the Prime Minister’s deputy secretaries of state, António Mendonça Mendes, from tourism, trade and services, Nuno Fazenda, and from agriculture, Gonçalo Rodrigues.
