Germany, Denmark and Norway will supply 16 artillery guns for armored vehicles to Ukraine as it seeks to bolster its heavy military arsenal to repel Russia from next year, Berlin said on Sunday.
This announcement follows German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht’s visit to Ukraine this weekend for the first time since the Russian invasion launched on February 24.
The three supplying countries have agreed to jointly finance the delivery of Zuzana-2 cannons, made in Slovakia, for an amount of 92 million euros, the Ministry of Defense in Berlin specified. Ukraine is expected to start receiving them in 2023.
Don’t be a part of this war
Kyiv demanded more, especially German Leopard tanks, which Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz’s government refused to provide. The latter, in fact, has stated that such a decision was not his sole responsibility and should first be discussed with his Western allies.
“It is perfectly clear to the German government and to all of NATO [que] we will not be part [belligérante] in this war,” he continued.
His visit to Odessa on Saturday came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin proclaimed the annexation of four new Ukrainian territories – Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions – strongly condemned by kyiv’s allies, including Germany.
