A few cents, or even a few euros more in bottles of alcohol? This is not the effect of inflation but the possible consequence of an increase in taxes on these products.
According le figaroIn fact, the government is working to increase taxes on alcohol. This measure could be considered during the review of the Social Security budget in September and would be applied next year.
Change in calculation method
According to Bercy, which confirms the ongoing negotiations, this increase would only be “a few cents”, but the sector, the French Federation of Spirits, rather evokes an increase of one to two euros per liter of alcohol.
Specifically, the Government wants to change the way of calculating the increase in the prices of alcoholic products. It is currently based on the evolution of prices for year N-2, which is reflected in excise duties, one of the taxes that make up the final price. In its project, the government wants the calculation to be based on the inflation of the previous year.
A method already applied to cigarettes by 2023 through the Social Security financing law. Some brands have seen their prices skyrocket and exceed 11 euros.
