The war in Ukraine promises to be a long one given military aid programs that span many years. Germany, which is the second largest contributor of military aid to Ukraine after the United States, estimates that by 2027 its military support will amount to 17 billion euros.
In a German government document published this Wednesday on its website, this aid amounts to 7.4 billion euros from the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. To this amount are added some 10.5 billion euros until 2027.
Criticized for the timidity of his support
This support comes from weapons and ammunition drawn from German army stocks, but also from equipment delivered by manufacturers, sometimes in cooperation with other partners.
On the first day of the NATO leaders’ summit in Vilnius, Germany had pledged to deliver new weapons to Ukraine in the amount of close to 700 million euros. The announcement came just two months after an earlier pledge of 2.7 billion euros was announced just before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Germany.
Germany has long been criticized by kyiv and some of its European partners, particularly in the East, for its timid military support for Ukraine. But for several months now, Berlin has intensified its efforts in this area: it is now delivering, in particular, ammunition, Leopard main battle tanks and anti-aircraft defense.
