This is one of the lessons from the latest wave of the “BFM basket.” In this selection of daily purchases that includes 50 identical products, Brittany seems to be the least expensive region, with prices somewhat lower than in mid-June. And the expert Olivier Dauvers – who runs the best blog in France on mass distribution – makes the same observation in a comparison, this time, of the prices of all products sold in drive.
Differences that allow those lucky enough to live in Brittany to save a lot of money. If we compare the average prices for routes between the least expensive department in France (Côtes d’Armor, number 22) and the most expensive department in France (in Paris, number 75), the difference amounts to 22%. That is to say, a family of Parisians that does 200 euros of purchases a week would only pay 164 euros for their trolley if they lived in the Côtes d’Armor. Enough to save almost 150 euros in the month.
Most frequent frontal competition between independent supermarkets in Brittany
To a lesser extent, the difference between the brands present in Brittany and those of the rest of the Ile-de-France, but also of Lyon, Marseille, the Alpes-Maritimes or Corsica remains very significant.
How are such price differences explained? In the first place due to the cost of renting commercial premises. The square meter is much higher in the Paris region, in Lyon, Nice or Cannes than in Brest or Lannion. Second reason: the purchasing power of customers, local but also passing through. More and more tourists are reducing the number of meals in restaurants during their stay in favor of supermarkets where they make more purchases.
Finally, there is the presence, to a greater or lesser extent, of independent supermarkets (Leclerc, Super U, Intermarché) in the same area of influence. The latter are more inclined to engage in a price war. However, these situations of head-on competition are more frequent in Brittany than in Bouches-du-Rhône or Ile-de-France.
