The European Central Bank is preparing to send a letter to the Italian government raising objections to its plan for an exceptional tax on bank profits, it reports Friday. Corriere della Sera.
In this letter, the ECB criticizes the fact that the Giorgia Meloni government announced this tax last week without previously informing either the Bank of Italy or the ECB itself, as it should have done under European standards, adds the Italian newspaper, without cite sources. This tax risks weakening the banking sector and the economy of Italy, the ECB will write in this letter that will be sent within two weeks at the latest, specifies the Corriere della Sera.
“I would do it again”
Earlier this week, in an interview with various Italian media, Giorgia Meloni said she took “full responsibility” for the decision made by her government. “She would do it again. Because I believe in doing the right thing,” said the Italian leader. According to the Ministry of Economy, this 40% tax will be a one-off measure and will not represent more than 0.1% of the banks’ total assets.
