Debt, taxes and tariffs: Bruno Le Maire unveils his roadmap for 2024

The Minister of Economy and Finance travels to Haute-Savoie accompanied by Roland Lescure, Minister of Industry. A field day to meet the employees of the Fournier factory, a furniture manufacturer. The opportunity to present the main lines of the 2024 budget.

The countdown begins! There is only one month left for Bruno Le Maire to present his budget for 2024 and find the necessary support in the opposition to vote on this text and thus avoid a 49.3.

The keyword, he repeated throughout the summer, is the reduction of the country’s debt. And yesterday again in the newspaper. Pointthe president stated: “We will begin to reduce the debt burden in 2026 and we will return to below 3% of the deficit in 2027.”

Emmanuel Macron adds “that he will not give in, that he will not back down despite the crises, even in fiscal matters, contrary to our habits in France”.

So the course is set, but the challenge promises to be difficult against the backdrop of weak economic growth expected to be 1% this year, little more next year.

Therefore, several important announcements are expected from the Minister who is traveling to Haute-Savoie today with Roland Lescure, Minister of Industry. A field day to meet the employees of the Fournier factory, a furniture manufacturer.

No tax increase but…

The total suppression of the CVAE, the contribution to the added value of companies, initially announced for 2024, should be staggered over time.

Reductions in employer contributions for wages between 2.5 and 3.5 minimum wages could be eliminated.

Two measures that are already provoking strong criticism from employers.

Bruno Le Maire should also announce the postponement of the 2 billion euro tax cut for households mentioned in May by the president, as well as an increase in taxes on motorway companies and on plane tickets.

Finally, the minister is expected to announce a reduction of one billion euros in funding for the CNRS and Pôle emploi.

Therefore, no tax increase is foreseen (this was also the back-to-school message of Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne stressed yesterday), but savings with very important economic and political risks.

Bruno Le Maire will speak at 11 am to factory employees and local agents.
