Taiwan: Foxconn chief announces his presidential bid

Foxconn founder, billionaire Terry Gou, announced his official candidacy for Taiwan’s presidential election as an independent on Monday.

Terry Gou, the founder and boss of Foxconnone of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, took advantage of a press conference on Monday to declare that it had “decided to participate in the 2024 presidential election and present my candidacy.”

A presidential election scheduled for January 2024

Terry Gou, who has long displayed his presidential ambitions, said earlier this year that he was seeking the nomination of the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan’s main opposition party.

But the KMT preferred a former police chief, Hou Yu-ih, now the mayor of New Taipei City despite his poor performance in recent weeks.

290,000 signatures are needed

However, the Foxconn boss, who is running as an independent, will still need to collect 290,000 signatures to be eligible. Terry Gou has organized several election campaign events in Taiwan in recent months.

Foxconn, also known by its official name Hon Hai Precision Industry, is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, assembling devices for many companies, including Apple.

Vice President Lai Ching-te, a member of President Tsai Ing-wen’s Democratic Progressive Party, is currently the favorite.
