The Prime Minister declared on Wednesday that it “makes no sense” for everyone receiving the National Minimum Wage (SMN) to start paying IRS in 2024, refusing this option for next year.
“On October 10, the state budget will be presented and what we will present is certainly a proposal that meets the objective already publicly declared: reducing by more than two billion euros what the Portuguese pay to the IRS. Therefore, it makes no sense for someone not to pay it [IRS] start paying, especially those with lower incomes,” said António Costa.
The Prime Minister answered questions from journalists during a visit to Nazaré, as part of the ‘Closer Government’ initiative, which takes place between today and Thursday in the Leiria district.
For António Costa, the possibility of updating the minimum wage, which would require workers earning this amount to pay IRS, is “an issue that cannot be raised and a discussion that makes no sense.”
“There will certainly come a day when the minimum wage will be well above the minimum wage, as it should be. […] That is not yet the case,” he said.
