Fuels: the air sector for the moment safe

The strike at TotalEnergies does not currently prevent planes from taking off due to lack of fuel, but signs of tension have emerged, according to professionals interviewed by AFP.

Do not panic between French airlines and airports. On aviation fuel, “there have been tensions this week but the situation today is not worrying,” the Ministry of Transport said on Friday, while the conflict in the energy company caused shortages at gas stations. However, TotalEnergies also produces and distributes jet fuel.

Groupe ADP, manager of airports in the Paris region, in particular Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, Orly and Le Bourget, told AFP that “the supply of kerosene remains assured”, without further details.

And this while Thierry Defresne, secretary of the CGT of the TotalEnergies European works council, affirmed that ADP had found a “second wind” this week thanks to the docking in Le Havre of a ship loaded with kerosene from Kuwait, after tensions according to him . .

Surveillance

Vinci Airports, administrator of several French airports, including Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Nantes, Rennes and Toulon, for its part, said that “we are not strictly short, but we are monitoring the situation carefully.”

“Companies have been instructed to arrive at our airports with an amount of fuel that allows them, as far as possible, to leave for their next destination without refueling,” a group official told AFP.

The Edeis group, which manages 16 regional airport platforms (Angers, Tours, Lorient, etc.), explained for its part to AFP that it had “taken the lead by supplying” because “the market had already been in tension for some years”. time”, due to the shortage of tanker truck drivers.

“We have a supplier diversification policy, which means that we are less sensitive to this type of event,” added Olivier Galzi, Edeis vice president. “On the other hand, if the movement continues, in the end we could be impacted. We estimate that we have between 15 days and a month of reserve depending on the airports,” he continued.

If the movement lasts…

The Union of French Airports (UAF) said it had not received any comments from its members about the kerosene shortage. On the other hand, the situation could be more tense in “avgas”, a fuel used in light aviation, according to the organization.

On the airline side, BFM Business questioned the National Aviation Federation and its officials, stating that it does not observe “any problem with the supply of kerosene in CDG for Aegean, Vietnam Airlines, Finnair and Air Tahiti Nui”.

On the other hand, flight schools have a hard time getting aviation fuel. This is particularly the case for Aéropyrénées at Perpignan airport.

Domestic air transport accounted for 3.8% of energy consumption in France in 2019, a figure that reached 15% including international flights, according to statistics from the ministry.
