For millions of taxpayers, it’s time to pay up. After having read the tax returns last spring, the tax administration will deduct from this Monday the bank accounts of French people who have not paid enough taxes in 2022 to regularize their situation. 9.6 million households would be affected for a total amount to be paid of 21.7 billion euros, according to The echoes.
These include those who allegedly did not adjust their tax withholding rate after an increase in income in 2022. For them, this means that the amount of tax deducted from their income for all of last year was less than that of the final tax calculated by the tax administration on the basis of the declaration submitted last spring.
Taxpayers who benefited from tax reductions and credits too early in January will also have to regularize their situation by reimbursing the overpayment to the tax authorities.

As specified by the tax services, the balance of the income tax will be paid in one go this Monday, September 25 if the amount to be paid is less than or equal to 300 euros. On the other hand, if the balance is greater than 300 euros, the payment will be divided into four debits of equal amounts on September 25, October 26, November 27 and December 27.
The debits will be identified on the bank statement by their origin “DIRECTION GENERALE DES FINANCES PUBLIQUES” and their wording “BALANCE INCOME TAX 2022 INVOICE NUMBER XXX”. The tax administration also remembers that the bank account of which it is aware can be consulted and modified on the site impots.gouv.fr in its particular space, section “Withholdings at source” and then “Update your bank details”.
