“Complicated, but playable”: industrialists on the starting blocks before the planned trade negotiations

A bill that advances the end date of trade negotiations to January 15, 2024 is due to be presented to the Council of Ministers this Wednesday. Manufacturers say they are prepared, but are not sure if this will lead to a mountain of falls .

New episode of the series about commercial negotiations between distributors and suppliers, especially tense and crucial in this period of high inflation. We knew that Bruno the Elder wanted to bring forward the ending. We already have a date, since this Wednesday morning a bill will be presented to the Council of Ministers that proposes setting January 15 as a deadline, instead of March 31.

“It is complicated, but viable if we plan to send the general conditions of sale and prices to distributors,” the head of the Consumer Business Liaison Institute (Ilec), which represents some of the industrialists in the sector, explains to BFM Business.

He committed to Bercy to pressure its members to transmit these documents between October 15 and November 1. Although he is “very much in favor of signing earlier”, he wonders whether bringing forward negotiations with large suppliers will not create a logjam for SMEs, which generally negotiate in advance.

Towards new increases?

And the outcome of these negotiations is not certain. For professionals, it is not certain that this will mean a mountain of price reductions:

And it is even estimated that there may even be increases, but that bringing forward the end of these negotiations “will at least finally clarify this debate.”

This is “an emergency measure” to “fight inflation,” Bercy insists, transferring price reductions to the consumer as quickly as possible, “wherever input prices have fallen.” At the moment, there is no question of setting a new date for the next negotiations, although a parliamentary mission should investigate the issue.
