Education, Defense… Which ministries are the winners of the 2024 budget?

If the 2024 budget is intended to be more sober than the 2023 version, most ministries will see their allocations stabilize or even increase.

Highly anticipated, the 2024 finance bill presented this Wednesday makes the recovery of public finances a priority. If Matignon had asked each ministry to identify a 5% savings, most would not see their credits fall in absolute value next year.

Some of those who will see their credits increase more than inflation will continue to be better off than others. Starting with the Ministry of the Armed Forces, whose budget will increase in 2024 by 3.3 billion euros (47.2 billion) in a context of growing geopolitical tensions.

The Government, which prioritizes education and training, has also decided to significantly increase the appropriations allocated to the Ministry of National Education (+3.9 billion, up to 64.2 billion), reflecting in particular the improvement of the teachers. to a lesser extent in Research and higher education (+1,000 million, 31,600 million).

Fall of credits for Bercy

The executive, which has set the goal of achieving full employment at the end of the five-year period, also increases the budget of the Ministry of Labor to 1.7 billion euros (22.4 billion).

Appropriations dedicated to ecology and sustainable development and mobility decrease, but mainly due to the end of the massive fuel subsidies granted in 2023. Excluding this effect, the budget for ecology increases by 1.2 billion euros. The Justice budget increases by 500 million euros (10.1 billion). An envelope to be used in particular for the recruitment of magistrates.

Finally, only the Ministry of Economy seems to be the big loser in the 2024 budget (-3.6 billion, up to 4.1 billion euros).
