Bercy hoped to attract 3.5 million French people with the new retirement savings plan. 7.4 million have subscribed. The outstanding balance also continues to increase: +19 billion euros in one year, or 85 billion euros at the end of the first quarter, according to data consolidated by Bercy.
A success for Bruno Le Maire. The Minister of Economy celebrated this dynamic in the Assises de l’Afer this Tuesday: “This shows that it is worth having simple systems (…) giving savers freedom of choice.”
Fiscal stability
In reality, the retirement savings plan allows you to choose, when you retire, between a life annuity or a capital. “It is the best way to make a savings product work,” continues Bruno Le Maire.
In the new PER, taxation is also advantageous. Payments are deductible up to 10% of taxable income. And to maintain the good dynamics, Bercy promises fiscal stability for this product in the coming years.
Financial business
The other advantage, perhaps less noticeable to the French: the PER directly finances companies. “Retirement savings plans are long-term savings, so they are savings that will finance the French economy,” explains Bruno Le Maire.
According to Bercy, 54% of the PER in circulation, that is, more than 40 billion euros, are invested directly in companies, in shares or through debt in bonds.
Did retirement savings really revive?
Despite everything, if the pending amount of the new PER increases, transfers from old retirement savings products have a lot to do with it. And the outstanding balance of all types of retirement savings products has been stagnant for a year, according to Bercy. When Livret A and life insurance have broken records this year.
