In France, almost a quarter of those employed (23.5%) worked at least one Sunday during a period of four consecutive weeks in 2022, according to Dares figures published this Wednesday. A proportion higher than that of 2021 (+0.6 points), but still lower than its 2019 level (25.8%).
In detail, 15.3% of workers declare having worked at least two Sundays and 8.2% only one last year. The proportion of people who work on Sundays, regularly or occasionally, is higher among the self-employed (39.4%) than among employees.
Similarly, there are significant differences according to the socio-professional category: as expected, farmers work significantly more on Sundays (73%) than artisans and merchants (32.7%), employees (28.8%), intermediate professions (22.1%), managers and higher intellectual professions (21.4%) or workers (13.1%).

The results are less disparate if we look at the criterion of sex and age, with slightly more women (24.3%) working on Sundays than men (22.8%), while people between 15 and 29 years old are somewhat more accustomed to Sunday work (24.6%). ) than those aged 30 to 49 years (24.2%), those aged 40 to 49 years (23.6%) and those aged 50 or over (22.4%).
In the agricultural sector in the broad sense, more than half of those employed worked at least one Sunday in 2022 (52.1%), compared to 14.7% in industry and 25.2% in the tertiary sector. In this last sector, the proportion of workers on deck on Sundays is especially high in social and medical-social accommodation (60.9%), accommodation and catering (53.4%), arts, shows and recreational activities ( 45.2%) and activities for human beings. health (41.7%).
Dares also highlights that certain professions “concentrate their activity on Sundays.” This is especially the case of “professions that guarantee the protection of the safety of people and property (53.6%)”, teachers (47.7%) or even professions that guarantee the permanence of services health and social doctors (46%).
