Private jets: Gabriel Attal wants to “force them to fly with biofuel”

The Minister of Action and Public Accounts reacted to the majority’s proposal to double the rate of kerosene for private planes by saying that he wanted to be “more ambitious”.

In the midst of the energy crisis, the executive wants private jets to contribute to national sobriety… But not necessarily by applying a surcharge. This was explained this Monday by the Minister of Action and Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, on the antenna of France Inter.

The chairman of the sustainable development committee, Jean-Marc Zulesi (Renaissance), introduced an amendment on Friday to double taxes on kerosene for aircraft. The objective is to “align the taxation” of kerosene used to fly private aviation with that of “gasoline used in automobiles”.

“We can be more ambitious”

Asked about the government’s support for such a measure, Gabriel Attal ratified the executive’s will to go in that direction, specifying that there will be a debate. “We can be more ambitious than that,” he added, however.

The Minister recalled that in March 2022 an Airbus A380 flight had been made, fueled 100% with biofuel. “Then it is possible,” he estimated. “It is indeed very expensive,” he admitted, before stating that he would prefer that users pay “more for their ticket” to consume less than pay a tax that they can afford “to continue polluting.”
