Fuel shortage: Elisabeth Borne refers oil companies and unions to “responsibility”

At RTL, the Prime Minister invited the management and unions of Esso and TotalEnergies to “sit around the table” to find a solution to the wage dispute.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said Monday that she expects “responsibility from the unions and the management” of the refineries “so that we can find an agreement and not penalize the French,” during an interview broadcast by RTL.

After nearly two weeks of strikes that led to fuel shortages at nearly a third of service stations in France, the CGT and TotalEnergies management had yet to open negotiations on Monday over a wage increase, despite mounting pressure from the government.

“I really invited management and worker representatives, both from Esso and Total, to sit around the table,” the head of government said on the sidelines of a trip to Algeria.

“It will improve during the week”

“I think that all this must be done in the discussion, in the negotiation,” he added, also explaining that he had “reorganized the logistics, the flows, to be able to supply the service stations of the regions involved (mainly Hauts-de-France and Île-de-France, Ed) from other deposits.” “It takes a little time, but it will improve during the week,” said Elisabeth Borne.

According to a latest situation update published by the Ministry of Energy Transition at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, almost a third (29.7%) of service stations in France lacked at least one fuel (compared to 21% of the Saturday).
