Milk producers call on supermarkets to raise producer prices

The Association of Milk Producers of Portugal (Aprolep) on Monday called on supermarket chains to raise the price to the producer, to an average value of 50 cents per kilo (kg).

In a statement, the association recalled that at the beginning of August, most producers were informed of a three cent increase for September, bringing the average price in Portugal to 43 cents per kg (40 in the Azores and 45 in the mainland). , and that producers supplying the Pingo Doce brand will receive an upgrade of eight cents per kg, giving them a value of more than 50 cents per kg.

“Aprolep challenges all other buyers to immediately raise the milk price for the producer to an average value of 50 cents/kg of milk in Portugal,” the association appealed to the association.

Dairy producers complain that in recent years the milk price update has “always come late, below production costs, below the European market and always in response to rising prices from other buyers or the search for buyers.” Spanish”.

“The results are the discouragement of producers, the weekly closure of dairy farms, the increase in the number of animals for slaughter due to lack of food or money to buy them and the sale of milk directly from Portuguese producers to Spanish buyers, such as the ending of the previous contracts,” they complained.
