The average overdraft of the French is slightly increased in 2022. At 232 euros in 2021, it rises to 239 euros in 2022, and registers a small rise of 3%, according to a Panorabanques study published this Tuesday.
On the other hand, the proportion of French people who have registered an overdraft is relatively stable. There are 47% who declare to be in the red once a year. This is one point more than the ratio registered in 2021 and four points less than in 2020.
More worryingly, the amount of unauthorized overdrafts, which give rise to the liquidation of many costs (agios, intervention commissions, etc.), increases significantly. The French who exceed the authorized overdraft have an average of 317 euros in 2022, compared to 284 euros in 2021, or 11% more than last year.
Inflation, the main cause of overdraft
Among the causes put forward by those surveyed, we find inflation in the first place. They are the 34% who say they are overdrawn because they cannot compensate for the price increase. They estimate on average that inflation starts their monthly budget of 112 euros.
72% of the discovered French also declare to have lost purchasing power during the year 2022. Of all the French, discovered or not, this proportion reaches 61%. They are even 42% to estimate that their purchasing power is weak, while they were only 36% in 2021.
And food is the expense item that most affects your budget. 84% state that it is what most affects their purchasing power on a day-to-day basis. It is followed by the price of fuels, with 72%, followed by energy prices (63%).
This study is based on a survey carried out by Poll&Roll for Panorabanques, through a self-administered questionnaire from August 8 to 13, 2022 among a sample of 1,000 French representative of the French population aged 18 or over.
