Bruno Le Maire estimates that the exceptional tax on refineries will contribute 200 million euros

Guest on Franceinfo morning, the Minister of Economy and Finance spoke about the government’s amendment to the 2023 finance bill aimed at requesting a contribution from oil, gas and coal producers and refiners.

The amount seems ridiculous compared to the 26,000 million that are expected from the recovery of the “annuities” made by electricity producers. But the state still has to add 200 million euros corresponding to the temporary tax on windfall profits of oil, gas and coal producers and refiners. This is the figure mentioned by Bruno Le Maire at the microphone of Franceinfo this Tuesday morning.

This measure corresponds to the second modification made by the government to the 2023 finance bill, which consists of a temporary contribution from these companies set at 33% of their profits, which is more than 20% higher than the average of the years 2019-2021. .

“We need companies, SMEs, VSE that are profitable”

Asked about the difference between this modification and the taxation that Nupes wanted to introduce, the Minister of Economy and Finance insisted on targeting this contribution. “The Nupes did not want to introduce a tax on super-profits, but a tax that would last until 2025, on all profits, of all companies with more than 750 million euros in turnover, he lamented. This means that in the field of luxury, chemical, pharmaceutical, automotive, aeronautics with Airbus, all our companies would have been taxed”.

Bruno Le Maire insisted on the need not to slow down the economic development of companies, whatever their size. “Basically what the Nupes don’t want is for a company to be profitable, he said. We start with the big ones and end with the smallest ones, we start with CAC 40 companies and we always end up taxing SMEs. That is what I protested against because I believe that today we need companies, SMEs, VSE that are profitable, that generate employment and prosperity for our compatriots”.

Another more fruitful amendment

Bercy’s boss also returned to the first amendment that the government took and that intends to recover the “annuities” that electricity producers make to finance the tariff shield. “Today, when electricity prices are above 180 euros per megawatt hour, the energy companies that produce electricity, it can be EDF or other energy companies, can sell at 200, 300, 400, 500 euros since prices have been fired, he explained. But the State recovers the difference between 180 and 400, 500, 600 euros and redistributes everything to our compatriots and companies.
