Christmas holidays: when is the best time to book depending on your destination?

According to data from Kayak, flight searches increase by almost 30% at the end of the year compared to the same period in 2022. For the most popular destinations, the comparator has established the right time to book and benefit from the most competitive rates.

Falling temperatures mean some people are probably already thinking about their Christmas holidays. Between January 15 and September 18, the Kayak comparator registered a 29% increase in flight searches during the period from December 15 to January 8 compared to last year. In detail, the increase is particularly strong for international flights (+28%) and especially those within Europe (+35%), while it is only 11% for domestic flights.

For each of the ten most searched destinations from Paris during this period, the site has established, through its “Best Time to Travel” tool, the best time to book your flight and take advantage of the most attractive prices in case of departure from Paris. Saturday December 23rd.

Tuesday December 19

From a global point of view, Tuesday, December 19, promises to be the most expensive day to travel around Europe and by plane, with an average price of round-trip tickets exceeding 200 euros. Sunday flights are usually the least traveled and have an average price of 162 euros, only 3 euros more than Friday flights, which are the busiest.

As for early bookings, Kayak determined that Mondays were the days to benefit from the cheapest flights with an average price of 147 euros.

Between 26 and 72 days in advance

According to Kayak, the most searched destination from Paris between December 15 and January 8 is Saint-Denis, the capital of Reunion Island. If they leave on December 23, travelers planning to go there will need to book their tickets 37 days in advance, that is, in mid-November. In this way, they can expect a price 15% lower than the average price of a return flight during the period. But the profit can be much greater, as in the case of Prague. The Czech capital is the fifth most sought after destination by French travelers. By booking your tickets 48 days in advance, you can cut your bill in half with a savings of 56%.

In some cases, however, it was necessary to start last weekend to foresee a saving of around 40% in the price of plane tickets. These are mainly exotic destinations or at least far from the top 10, such as Tunisia and Cancun (with 71 and 72 days in advance respectively) that complete the podium or even Phuket in Thailand and Los Angeles, which required booking ideally 69 or 71 days in advance. in advance. On the other hand, Ireland fans can afford to wait until the end of November to book their flights to Dublin.

Although it marks the start of the school holidays, December 23 is not necessarily the day that offers the most competitive prices and leaving a few days early can mean significant savings. For Zanzibar, Tanzania’s paradise destination, for example, Kayak recommends “booking a 7-day trip departing from Paris 40 days before December 19, which should be the most profitable departure date this year, i.e. around “November 9.” ” As for the emblematic destination of Saint-Denis in Réunion, “it is recommended to start a week-long trip on December 19 to save up to 33% on flights compared to the most expensive dates.”
