Hurricane Tammy: the state of natural disaster in Guadeloupe will soon be recognized

The government initiated an accelerated procedure for the recognition of the state of natural disaster following the damage caused by Hurricane Tammy in Guadeloupe.

The Government has initiated the accelerated procedure to recognize the state of natural disaster in Guadeloupe, affected this weekend by Hurricane Tammy and the heavy rains that followed, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced on Monday. “We decided, with Philippe Vigier [ministre délégué chargé des Outre-mer, ndlr]to initiate the accelerated procedure for recognition of the state of natural disaster in Guadeloupe,” Gérald Darmanin wrote on X (ex-Twitter).

The department of the Antilles, whose approximately 380,000 inhabitants were confined for part of the day on Saturday during the passage of the hurricane, suffered heavy rains and floods on Sunday, but the only damage recorded was material, with no victims worthy of regret. Minister Philippe Vigier was due to arrive there on Monday afternoon (night in mainland France) to assess the damage.

Electricity and drinking water.

The strong winds of the category 1 hurricane especially affected the islands of Désirade and Marie-Galante. The entire meteorological episode interrupted the supply of drinking water and electricity and damaged some roads. Several drinking water production plants remained closed on Monday due to heavy rains and storms, reported the joint union that manages the Guadalupe network.

“As the drinking water network is interrupted and the quality of the water affected, as happens with every bad weather, it is advisable not to consume water while waiting for the analyzes” from the regional health agency (ARS), the operator added in a statement. . .
