Ukraine urgently asks the G7 to create an air shield to protect itself from Russian missiles

To ward off missiles that have been raining down on Ukraine since Monday, the United States is accelerating the delivery of anti-aircraft defenses, including NASAMS surface-to-air missiles.

On October 10 alone, more than 84 missiles fell on Ukraine, which only managed to eliminate 43 of them. Kyiv has been asking its allies since last summer to provide it with an effective anti-aircraft defense to deal with this situation. On Tuesday, Zelensky asked the G7 to help him create an “air shield” over Ukraine.

On Monday, the White House announced in a press release the shipment of “advanced” air defense systems. They will be NASAMS batteries (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System), a medium and long-range system capable of intercepting missiles at a distance of 180 km. Designed by the Norwegian group Kongsberg, it is produced by the American company Raytheon.

American Nasams and German Iris-T

NASAMS is equipped with three-dimensional radars to detect missiles and attack them with Raytheon’s AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, whose speed can reach Mach4. In the United States, this system notably protects Washington from possible air attacks.

Germany also intends to participate in the protection of Ukraine against bombing. Berlin will deliver an Iris-T defense system in the coming days (Infrared Imaging System) with a range of 40 kilometers at 20 kilometers altitude. It is produced by the German Diehl BGT Defense.

France has not yet specified how it will respond to this call from the Ukrainian president. Since the start of the conflict, France has deployed a Mamba medium-range surface-to-air defense system in Romania, where it acts as a framework nation for NATO forces. The General Staff specified at the time that it was about “responding to the needs of NATO’s Integrated Air and Anti-Missile Defense (IAMD)”. Mamba is “connected and integrated through a tactical data link to the Romanian defense system and to that of theNATO“.
